County aquifer hits historic low – As of yesterday, the Edwards Aquifer level at the J-27 index well in Uvalde was 859.8 feet above mean sea level. To put things in perspective, the last time that level fell to or below the 860-foot mark at J-27 was in 1996, when dry conditions persisted through-out June, July, August and a portion of September. During that period, the level hit a low of 859 feet on July 9 before returning to 860.1 on Sept. 13. Prior to that, the well level dropped below 860 feet from July through November of 1984, when a low of 856.9 was recorded from Sept. 26 through 28, and from June through November of 1967, when a low of 856.5 feet was recorded on Aug. 17. These precariously low levels pale in comparison, however, to Edwards levels recorded from 1952 to 1958, a period referred to as the “drought of record,” during which levels plunged to an all-time low of 818 feet on Aug. 23 of 1953 and remained below 860 until Oct. 6 of 1958.

Work on Highway 90 will add turn lane, passing lanes – Drivers traveling along U.S. Highway 90 West can hardly miss seeing the construction going on just west of Uvalde. Tom Graff, office manager for the Texas Department of Transportation’s Uvalde office, said the project involves widening U.S. Highway 90 in nine different locations. The closest location will include a center turn lane and runs from Fort Clark Road, near where the new Uvalde County Jail is being built, west to the auction barn. The other eight locations will consist of passing lanes. … The $8.6-million project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2012. A plan to widen U.S. Highway 90 all the way from Uvalde to Del Rio has not yet materialized, said Graff. “Several years ago, they did some planning on a four-lane divided highway between Uvalde and Del Rio, but it’s going to take additional right of way.”

Young Uvalde wrestler pins title – Uvalde native Adelyda Perez was 4 years old when she spotted a belt her dad, John Perez, was looking at on the computer and asked if he could buy her one. “He said you can’t buy it. You have to win it,” she said. “That’s when I started wrestling.” Now 10 years old and a fourth-grader at Anthon Elementary School, she won her second championship title in the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals at Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma City, Okla., this past weekend. … Wrestlers are matched by weight, not age, said Adelyda, who wrestles in the 95-pound weight class. In most competitions she enters, boys and girls compete together. “I have wrestled boys and girls ever since I started wrestling,” she said. Her father, who coaches wrestling at the Uvalde Wrestling Club, said Adelyda has recorded 45 wins and three losses this year.

Producer votes will decide mohair promotion program – Ballots for voting in the April 19-30 referendum on continuation of the mohair promotion and market development program are being mailed to all known mohair producers in Uvalde County, announced Lester Gilleland, chairman of the Uvalde County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee. “The vote will decide whether producers want to continue their support for the mohair sales promotion programs,” Gilleland said, “but it will not affect present price support payment legislation.” Under the new agreement, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Mohair Council of American would set up price-support payment deductions of up to 1.5 cents a pound on mohair marketed during 1971-1973. Funds collected would be used by the Mohair Council to continue a program of mohair advertising, sales promotion, and related activities. The ASC Committee Chairman said a similar agreement was approved by producers in March of 1967. During the past three years, the Council’s budget for advertising and sales promotion programs has been $395,000 annually.
