United Auto Supply proposes mega-warehouse in Lysander; it could create up to 500 jobs - syracuse.com

LYSANDER, NY — United Auto Supply is proposing building a huge warehouse/distribution center on 122 acres in the town of Lysander.

The 1 million-square-foot center, which would be built in three phases, would be equal in size to the floor space of almost two Carrier Domes.

The first phase of the project could add 100 to 150 jobs that pay $18 an hour, James Trasher of Clough Harbor & Associates, told Lysander planners.

When completed in a couple years, the facility near the intersection of Route 48 and Hencle Boulevard could employ up to 500 new people, he said.

United Auto Supply, an auto parts retailer and distributor based in Syracuse, has 30 retail locations and employs about 500 people. It got its start in 1946 with a 2,500-square-foot store.

“We are experiencing explosive growth and have significantly expanded‚’’ said James Ranalli III, president of United Auto Supply His father, James Ranalli Jr., is chief executive officer.

Several factors are driving that growth, but one of the most significant is the new e-commerce part of the business, which started in 2018, Ranalli III told Syracuse.com | The Post Standard.

“We are shipping orders to all 50 states, and internationally,’' he said.

The need for the warehouse comes from United Auto’s decision to carry all the car parts needed for today’s vehicles, Ranalli said. The Covid-19 pandemic seems to have prompted many people to hang onto their cars and improve them either to keep or to sell, he said.

Do-it-yourselfers, car dealers and independent service centers (like Dunn Tire) and other car parts stores (like Auto Zone) are among their biggest customers.

“There is such a proliferation of parts and they are so complex today,’' Ranalli said. “For example, every car today has a unique starter. Twenty years ago, every car used the same starter.”

The smaller auto parts retailers aren’t large enough to carry all the parts because they don’t have the space, so they buy from United Auto Supply, he said.

In the past three years sales have increased about four times what they were, Ranalli said. He declined to provide specific numbers as the company is privately owned.

United Auto Supply would use the Lysander warehouse as its main distribution center, he said.

The company will eventually move its headquarters and operations from the former P&C Warehouse at 1200 State Fair Blvd to Lysander, Ranalli said. That building would either be leased or possibly used for another division, he said. The move wouldn’t take place until probably late 2022.

The State Fair site employs about 300 people, who would all move to Lysander.

The company plans to continue building an 80,000-square-foot building at 738 Erie Blvd. W., the former site of Roth Steel. That would continue to be used as a warehouse, Trasher said.

The company needs a full environmental review and public hearing probably in May, but Trasher told planners they’d like to get approval for the first phase by late spring or early summer if possible.

The warehouse would operate 24 hours, seven days a week, and be closed only on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Trasher said they will likely seek tax credits down the road from the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency.

The warehouse would have three access points - two on Hencle Road and one on Route 48. It would be 1,000 feet from Interstate 690.
