MEMPHIS, Tenn. — As the Memphis Police Department continues its recruitment efforts, Chief CJ Davis says they’re also working hard to create task forces.

It’s a growing concern in Memphis. People leave their cars to run into the gas station or the grocery store, and the next thing you know, the car is gone.

Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis says it’s a problem that goes beyond just a stolen car.

“We stood up an auto-theft task force. A lot of cars are stolen in the city of Memphis, and those vehicles are being used to commit crimes,” Davis said.

She said there’d been an uptick in stolen vehicles that are used to commit other crimes like drag racing, drive-by shootings, and robberies and then abandoned.

In a public forum last week, Chief Davis announced the early success of the auto theft task force.

“They have been very successful in identifying auto thieves, arresting auto thieves, and recovering vehicles. Hundreds of vehicles have been recovered, but unfortunately what we want to do is stop these thefts from happening in the first place,” she said.

Davis said another job of the task force is keeping an eye on interstate racing and shootings, and it’s been successful thus far.

Davis said this year to date, Memphis is about 40 percent down in shootings.

But for Memphians, it’s little comfort knowing that auto thefts and carjackings are still at a high.

“People need to feel safe to go about their regular activities like going to the grocery store, going to the service station, or whatever. It’s really upsetting to have it happen to you or feel like it’s going to happen to you,” said Walter Mischke.

Steven Henderson added, “I think it’s awful. That’s why they steal cars, to commit another crime, so that’s bad.”

Earlier this month, our FOX13 Investigates showed more than 1,500 people had been carjacked.
