Antique auto club to cruise Elkins Saturday | News, Sports, Jobs - The Inter-Mountain

ELKINS — The Antique Automobile Club of America will be making a local stop Saturday as more than 85 classic cars will cruise into Elkins.

The antique autos will journey from Canaan Valley Resort in the morning and will make their first stop at the Depot at Elkins Town Square, where they can be seen from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

“We are fortunate to have this group select Elkins as a place to visit during their time in the Potomac Highlands,” said Anne Beardslee, executive director of the Elkins-Randolph County Tourism CVB and Welcome Center. “Antique cars are a very popular part of the culture in this area and we love when others want to share their experiences. We hope that local people will take advantage of the times available to enjoy these unusual vehicles.”

After their stop downtown, the cars will travel a short distance across Elkins to the Steer Steakhouse and Gandy Dancer parking lot, where they can be viewed from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday. The club members will take in a show at the Gandy Dancer while there, but will be available to answer any questions about the vehicles from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Individuals from 18 different states will be climbing behind the seats of their classics, which range from a 1932 Buick pickup truck to a 1996 Lincoln. All of the cars have to be registered as antique vehicles to be in the club, which is for cars and trucks 25 years and older.

“Some of the cars will be parked in the Railroad Parking lot during their visit to Town Square in the morning, because with almost 90 cars we had to get a little creative for them with parking,” Beardslee said. “While at Town Square the club members will have an opportunity to tour the Railroad Museum and the Appalachian Discovery Center. After that they will move up to the Gandy Dancer where they will go to a show, but people will be able to look at their cars the entire time they are there.”

Also making an appearance during the morning stop is a 1946 Cadillac that it set up to run on railroad tracks. The antique car, which belongs to the Railroad Museum, will be located on the tracks next to the depot for anyone wanting to take a look at the interesting vehicle.

The preservation and enjoyment of automotive history of all types has been the AACA’s lone goal since its inception in 1935. The club’s stop in the area is part of its Founders Tour. The AACA will journey to the East Shore of Maryland beginning on June 2 for the Eastern Divisional Tour.
