A new car detailing center could soon open on Madison Street following a favorable recommendation by the Oak Park zoning board of appeals.

Justin Miller of Miller’s Auto Detail is seeking to open the detailing center at 248 Madison St., a building that sits between the Oak Park District 97 administration building and the Oak Park Animal Hospital.

Zoning Board members heard the proposal at their June 2 meeting and unanimously recommended it be approved by the Village Board.

The auto detailer is currently operating as a mobile business, Miller said, but he is looking to open a permanent location within the Madison Street corridor. Miller said mobile services would continue to be offered, and the physical shop would be appointment-only.

“Miller’s Auto Detail operates only as a detail, not a car wash,” Miller said. “A car wash is a drive-thru that takes 20 to 30 minutes. We’re a detail shop where a single vehicle can take anywhere from three hours to three days to complete. Customers can only schedule a time to get their vehicle detailed. There will not be lines of people waiting for service.”

Miller said the operations will be “wholly contained” inside the building at all times, with four “stacking stations” for cars inside. He is also proposing to install a new water and filtration system for any waste water created.

“It’s going to be installed to ensure filtered water is discarded into our sewer system,” Miller said.

With 20 years of detailing experience, Miller said he opened his mobile detailing service in May 2020 after leaving a job with Ford Motor Company. Through his contacts in the community, Miller said he saw a great demand for the type of service he offers.

“Oak Park has no detailing services at all,” Miller said. “We provide high-quality interior and exterior detailing, paint correction and ceramic coatings. We provide monthly maintenance packages for customers and pickup services free to all Oak Park residents. We pick up a customer’s vehicle at their home, take it to our shop, detail it and return it to the customer.”

Resident Amy Starin wrote a letter of support for the application, which was read at the public hearing by Oak Park zoning administrator Michael Bruce.

“We have been 32-year residents of Oak Park and recall the hand car wash that had previously been located on Madison Street,” Starin wrote. “With the recent closure of the car wash at Harlem Avenue and Randolph Street, there is not a convenient, high-quality car wash and detail resource in the south part of Oak Park. We believe such a business will be a viable development to that section of Madison Street.”

Zoning board members agreed, with Steven Ruszczyk saying he appreciated the service required an appointment and that cars would access the building from the rear alley to the north.

“There’s a thoughtful plan for cars entering and exiting the facility,” Ruszczyk said. “That really goes to minimize the impact on the neighborhood. This is clearly a very positive addition to our community.”

While he awaits a final approval vote from the village board, Miller said he is hopeful he can add to the village’s diverse and successful business community.

“My wife and I decided to move to Oak Park in 2017 because it was a one-stop shop with great schools, churches, restaurants, shopping and parks and we want to be an addition to all those wonderful things this community has to offer,” Miller said. “I look forward to bringing an economic viability to the village and a business our residents can trust.”
