Auto supplier Mobis Alabama LLC announced this week that it was expanding into the Birmingham metro area, with a $15.8 million new facility that is expected to support 120 jobs within three years.

The company, a subsidiary of Hyundai Mobis, announced plans to open its second Alabama facility at the Jefferson County Metropolitan Industrial Park in McCalla.

Mobis currently operates a facility in Montgomery County that supplies the Hyundai plant in Montgomery and Kia plant in West Point, Ga.

“Mobis is excited about opening its second facility in Alabama, this time utilizing the great workforce in the Jefferson County area,” James Jeon, Program Manager for Mobis US Alabama said in a news release. “We are thankful for the tremendous support we have received from the Jefferson County Commission, the City of Birmingham and the Birmingham Business Alliance, and we look forward to being a part of this dynamic community.”

According to the Birmingham Business Alliance, the industrial park -- often called JeffMet McCalla -- is home to 13 companies, including Publix, Home Depot and auto suppliers Gestamp and Yanfeng.

Brian Jennings, vice president of economic development at the BBA, said this project further represents the Birmingham region’s increasingly strong presence in the automotive industry.

“To land this partnership with Mobis is a tremendous win for Jefferson County at a critical time for jobs and investment,” Jennings said. “This project, when operational, will provide impacts beyond those in jobs and investment and put our region closer to building a cluster of next-generation automobile technologies and manufacturers.”
