A family-owned Centre County auto body shop opened its doors last week at its new State College area location, offering a much larger space and an opportunity to expand its services.

Keck’s Collision Repair opened on Jan. 24 in the former Nittany Gymnastics building at 2300 Commercial Boulevard in College Township after spending nearly a year on renovations to the facility.

Owner Tyler Keck, a Bradford native, moved to Centre County 15 years ago and worked for several body shops before opening his own business four years on Nittany Valley Drive in Walker Township.

The move to the new Centre Region location vastly increased Keck’s space, from 1,200 square feet to nearly 8,000. Even with the growing business, Keck said his team strives to be “like a friend that’s helping you out.”

“We just treat everybody’s car like it’s our own and try to do the best work we can,” he said.

Keck and his wife, Teresa, have two sons, Elliot and Ethan.

We caught up with Tyler Keck to talk about his family’s business and the move to the new facility.

StateCollege.com: How long has Keck’s Collision Repair been in business?

Tyler Keck: Four years.

How did you get into this work?

I went to WyoTech and then I worked at numerous different places around here. I worked at Black Walnut [Body Works], LAVA [Auto Body], State College Ford.

What led to the move of your business from Nittany Valley Drive to the new location on Commercial Boulevard?

We needed more room. That was a 1,200-square foot facility and we moved into this 8,000 square foot facility with all brand new equipment.

When did you decide to make that move?

We signed the lease in February of last year. We’ve been renovating. This used to be the old Nittany Gymnastics building. So we had to fill all the pits in, do everything for ADA compliance and put a paint booth in.

What kind of services do you offer?

Collision repair and then we’re offering this new paint protection film that’s actually a sprayable paint protection film to help with stone chips. We work with all insurance companies to do collision repairs.

With the larger space is there anything different you’re able to do that you weren’t able to do at the old place?

Yes, lots. We can have cars inside… We were working out of pretty much a two-bay garage, so now we can fit about 12 cars in here, 12 to 15 cars. We’ve been waiting to push this Clarity Coat, this peelable, paintable protection film, until I had a better paint booth. We’re doing it right now on a brand new Kia Stinger twin turbo.

We have a large office now. Before, our office was extremely small. Now there’s a place for customers to sit and there’s art work displayed.

How do you think Keck’s stands out, or what do you think sets you apart?

We don’t have any direct repairs. All of our work is by word of mouth and by referrals, and we have about 30 five-star reviews on Google from happy customers. We just treat everybody’s car like it’s our own and try to do the best work we can. We try not to be a corporation and we try to be more like a friend that’s helping you out. We’re still a business making money but we want to treat people fairly.

I love what I do. It’s all I’ve ever enjoyed doing. I think it’s pretty cool I get to do what I enjoy and make money doing it.
