Spain's three leading international film sales companies — Filmax, Film Factory and Latido — have set up a joint association, VICA, to promote Spanish-language film and TV worldwide.

Filmax, Film Factory and Latido, the three leading film sales companies for cinema from Spain and Latin America, have joined forces to create a single umbrella association to promote Spanish-language film and TV worldwide.

Filmax has handled titles such as Polo Menárguez's El Plan (2019) and is selling Toño Lopez's upcoming comedy Brothers-in-Law at the virtual European Film Market (March 1-5). Film Factory's Spanish-language slate includes such features as Guatemalan Oscar contender La Llorona and the hit comedy franchise A Spanish Affair.

On Latido's slate are films such as Annecy animated award winner Bunuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles and David Pérez Sañudo's Ane Is Missing, which premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival last year. Together, the trio represent the largest volume of film produced in Spain and are key actors in Latin America. With VICA, the group hopes to increase the presence and reception of Spanish-language film and television production.

"In an increasingly globalized world and within a highly competitive environment, international sales agencies are an essential tool when it comes to achieving the best possible results for the films they represent," the group said in a statement.

With their deep and varied back catalogs, Filmax, Film Factory and Latido want to open up international markets to Spanish and Ibero-American content. While streaming platforms, particularly Netflix, have given Spanish-language films and series increased international exposure — Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia's high-concept horror film The Platform (2019) become a global hit on Netflix — the VICA founders believe the Spanish industry needs an association that works for their common interests.

"VICA was not founded with confrontation in mind, but rather with a wish to collaborate, as long as the essential service that the international sales agencies in our country provide is valued as it should be," the group said. "We feel that there is a lack of awareness with respect to the huge task carried out by sales agencies and so our intention is also to include an aspect of teaching, with regard to the markets and how they work."VICA has been in the works for some time now but the founders said the rapid changes in the industry brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic — particularly the boom in streaming — has made the role of international sales agencies "more relevant than ever."

The group hopes they can help local producers and filmmakers look beyond their home markets and give them a better idea of the true global value of their films and series, as well as help them reach a wider international audience.
