Business promotion: 'Shop Wyoming & Win' saw record participation - The Daily News Online

WARSAW — A record number of people participated in the “Shop Wyoming and Win” contest despite a challenging economic environment.

A total of 782 people participated in the 10th annual “shop local” promotion supporting Wyoming County businesses, according to the Wyoming County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism. That amounted to $579,546 in total purchases, generating $36,364 in estimated sales taxes.

Shop Wyoming & Win takes place from Black Friday to Christmas Eve. Shoppers save their receipts from Wyoming County businesses.

Participants are eligible for one entry in a grand prize drawing, for every $50 worth of purchases they make within the county.

Other statistics included:

n In-county residents accounted for 56 percent of the purchases. Forty-four percent of purchases were made by out-of-county residents.

n Of the in-county purchasers, 22 percent were from Warsaw; 12 percent were from Arcade; 10 percent each were from Attica, Java and Perry; 8 percent were from Strykersville; 7 percent were from Wyoming; 6 percent were from Varysburg; and 5 percent were from Silver Springs.

n Of the out-of-county purchasers, 45 percent were from the Buffalo area; 32 percent were from Genesee County; 14 percent were from the Rochester area; and 9 percent were from Livingston County.

Three winners were also selected at random during this month’s Wyoming County Board of Supervisors meeting.

They included:

n Jeffery Wheeler of Bergen won a Char-Broil Gas Grill donated by Ace Hardware of Attica and Warsaw.

n Glenna Hinkson from East Bethany won a massaging/heated rocker recliner donated by Harding’s Furniture, Flooring & Mattress in Attica.

n Chloe Straw of Gainesville won a Shop Local Gift Card Basket valued at $1,000.

“On behalf of the Chamber and the community, we extend congratulations to all the winners of this year’s “Shop Wyoming and Win” buy-local promotion,” said Chamber President Scott Gardner in a news release. “Thank you to the many businesses who participated this year with support and placing of drop boxes. We also thank everyone who shopped locally in Wyoming County, as it was critical to helping our local businesses this holiday season.”
